So it begins!

A few weeks ago my mom went in to talk to the radiation oncologist about what the process was going to look like for her. When all of this started back in June, we were under the impression that she would go for a lumpectomy and then have radiation and hopefully that would be the end of it.

However, after her most recent doctors appointment with the radiation oncologist a few things have changed and it looks like this journey might be a little longer than originally expected as they now are suspecting that chemo will be needed. As a family I know we were all shocked to hear this and is definitely not anything you want to hear.

On Tuesday of this week, my mom will go in for her lumpectomy. We will wait for the results of the pathology test as this will be able to tell us what stage of cancer and what the next steps are going to be (what type of radiation she can have and which "cocktail" they will mix up for her chemo). At this time, the radiation oncologist is not speculating any specifics with the chemo but has said that it will be necessary.

They are expecting that she will begin her radiation after they get the results of the pathology test. The radiation will be for a week and she will go in 2x a day.

They plan to start the chemo 2-4 weeks after the radiation. Her treatment will be for 2 months, at this time we are not really sure how often she will recieve the treatments.

As all of you know, she LOVES being active and being in the outdoors. So this weekend we headed up to Flagstaff for a weekend away. What better way to get her mind off of this week than to go camping and enjoy hiking, biking, drinking and eating with the company of her AMAZING friends (and kids! ;)).

Rainey planned a great camping trip and even brought along cake, ice cream, and champagne to have an early birthday celebration!

49 years old this August- I am sure that she could think of MANY other ways to celebrate her last year of the 40's, but that what makes her so awesome because she keep a positive attitude no matter what she is faced with.
